Free Computer Classes!
CHICAGO – Illinoisans interested in improving their computer skills can take free computer classes and exams thanks to the Microsoft Elevate America program. With these newly developed skills, individuals will be able to access greater job opportunities and better compete in the workplace, according to the state’s top commerce official.
“During a time when millions of Americans are unemployed and searching for jobs, it is important that people be equipped with the tools they need to succeed,” said Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Director Warren Ribley. “These classes are an important component in helping Illinois workers acquire the computer skills they need in order to move forward in their careers or prepare for a new career.”
Through October 31, individuals can request a voucher to take free online courses, including intermediate-level Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 2007, as well as advanced-level training for IT professionals. Vouchers must be activated before October 31 but individuals have up to a year to complete coursework. Certification testing is also available if completed by October 31.
The program is made possible through a public-private partnership between the State of Illinois and the Microsoft Corporation. Elevate America also provides students with career resources to find internships and permanent jobs.
The state commissioned Lumity, a Chicago nonprofit committed to closing the digital divide by offering other nonprofits technology and financial services, to help distribute Elevate America vouchers. To contact Lumity for a voucher, e-mail elevateamerica@lumity.org or call 312-372-4872 ext. 119.

2009 Summer Nutrition Program to Provide 1 Million
Free Meals to Chicago’s Children and Youth this Summer
(June 15, 2009) Beginning today through September 4, Chicago residents 18 years of age or younger can access free nutritional meals at more than 200 locations around the city through the Summer Nutrition Program. The annual program serves to supplement the school meal service which provides economically disadvantaged youth with free or price-reduced meals during the school year.
“The economic downturn has placed a financial strain on Chicago’s families making it difficult for many to fulfill the basic needs of their children,” said Commissioner Mary Ellen Caron, Ph.D., Chicago Department of Family and Support Service. “Assistive programs like the Summer Nutrition Program offer families support and provide a resource to ensure Chicago’s children do not go hungry this summer.”
The Summer Nutrition Program provides nutritious breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks for youth, though meal options vary by site. All meals meet USDA nutrition guidelines and are accessible through a network of Summer Nutrition Program sites, including CHA development sites, day camps, parks, community and faith-based organizations.
Residents interested in learning about locations and times of participating Summer Nutrition Program, may call 311 or visit www.cityofchicago.org/fss.
Organizations interested in becoming a Summer Nutrition Program site may apply through the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services’ Web site at www.cityofchicago.org/fss or in person at the department’s King Community Service Center, 4314 S. Cottage Grove.
The Summer Nutrition Program is presented by the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services, the Illinois State Board of Education, the Chicago Housing Authority, Chicago Public Schools, the Chicago Park District, Food Service Professionals and the Illinois Hunger Coalition.
Chicago Department of Family and Support Services is dedicated to supporting a continuum of coordinated services to enhance the lives of Chicago residents, particularly those most in need, from birth through the senior years. The department works to promote the independence and well-being of individuals, support families and strengthen neighborhoods by providing direct assistance and administering resources to a network of community-based organizations, social service providers and institutions. For more information about the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services, call 312-743-0300 or visit www.cityofchicago.org/fss.

Do you and your family know what to do?
During the month of April, we are partnering with many of our CPR training centers to hold free or low cost CPR for Family and Friends classes in our communities. It’s a great opportunity for residents to learn this lifesaving skill close to home. This is the seventh year we have held this promotion and we have over 250 sites registered!
Please spread the word about these classes! Check out the links to class listings on our Web site, and forward them to your volunteers and partners to encourage further distribution and community registration. This is a great way to show what we do in the community! Do you or your family/friends need CPR training?

The Clinical Team, Sharing their Knowledge!
Each study field center has a clinic accessible to the population invited to participate in the study. For the convenience of our study participants, the Chicago Field Center has two clinic sites: Community Health located at 2611 W. California Avenue;
the Northwestern University Preventive Medicine Clinic located at 680 N. Lake Shore, Suite 800.
When participants arrive at the clinic, they will receive the following tests: blood pressure, an electrocardiogram, hearing, lung function, oral examination, nutritional assessment, physical activity assessment, and home sleep monitoring. All staff have completed extensive training in clinical procedures. All team members do a series of clinical exams and must be certified to work in the study. The clinical team is made up of eight health interviewers, all of whom are cross trained to administer several of the eight exams.

There are four dental hygienists who administer the dental evaluation and three nutritionists who administer the nutritional evaluation. The study has two phlebotomists who draw blood for the lab exam and a lab supervisor. To ensure that all participants receive the treatment they deserve and are seen in a timely manner, the clinics have a project coordinator, Karen Mancera-Cuevas, and 3 assistant coordinators.

Knock, Knock! There's a recruiter at your door!
The Chicago Field Site has 16 recruiters, who are actively recruiting door-to-door, seven days a week. Two field coordinators oversee the recruiters while they are out in the community. Recruiter Manager/Director, Dr. Catalina Ramos ensures that all recruiters are trained, certified, up to date on study procedures, and understand how important participants are to the study’s success. Each one of our recruiters participates in a series of trainings. These trainings certify recruiters in conducting home interviews, research, recruitment, and cultural competency. The recruiters also become familiarized with the study’s clinical exams so they can explain clearly to participants what they should expect the day of a clinic appointment.
Before recruitment begins in a given area, they mail out invitations to potential households.
They also make phone calls to homes!
and finally they make house visits!
